April 26 & 27, 2008 - Vehicle Rescue Training
This past weekend five members continued with their vehicle rescue certification to the Operations level at the Tri-County Fire School in Smethport, PA. In May, members will complete the third part of the program achieveing the Technician level certification.

Bingo players, residents, and neighboring departments are encouraged to come and play bingo this Saturday night at a special benefit bingo game being held at our Interstate Parkway hall. Proceeds from the event will be used to help with healthcare and medical expenses for the family of firefighter Jay Bradish, and wife Delora Bradish who was seriously injured in an auto accident. Wildfire Response
On Saturday April 19, Chief 15 (Burkhouse), also a DCNR Forest Fire Warden, activated 9 members of our department as part of the DCNR District 15 Wildfire crew. The District 15 team was activated by DCNR to respond to a wildfire in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon area. The crew left on Saturday and returned Sunday evening after doing their part to contain the 3,000 acre blaze. Additionally, members from the Corydon Township, Otto Township, Rew, and Port Alleghany fire departments, and 6 members of the Coudersport Bureau of Forestry, all served to make up the District 15 crew. Good job guys!
April 19, 2008 - Mutual Aid Structure Fire with Bradford City Fire Dept.
This morning around 1:15, crews were dispatched to provide water support with the Bradford City Fire Dept. at the scene of a structure fire on South Avenue. Crews were on scene until approximately 3:00. Units on scene along with Bradford City were Engine 153 and Engine 151.
April 18, 2008 - Mutual Aid Wild Fire with Corydon Twp.
Today around 12:34 pm, crews were dispatched to provide mutual aid with Corydon Township V.F.D. to a wild fire on Route 59 east of the Bradford Ranger Station on Allegheny National Forest. The area involved was approximately 7 acres. Crews were on scene until 4:45. Chief 19 had command. Units on scene: Utility 152, Chief 15 (Burkhouse).
April 16, 2008 - Accident with Entrapment
Today crews encountered a challenging extrication when they responded to a motor vehicle accident in the 300 block of South Avenue where two heavy duty 4X4 pick-ups hit head-on. The accident occured in front of Firefighter Tim Burkhouse who called 911. Asst. Chief 15-10 (Brocius) arrived on scene and established command. Command was then transfered to Chief 15 (Burkhouse) and 15-10 assumed extrication operations. When Engine 153 arrived on scene, crews stabilized the vehicles and went to work removing the driver's side doors and roof. A helicopter was requested to the scene and landed on the lawn behind the Holiday House Motel. A crew from Engine 151 secured the landing zone.
March 29, 2008 - Vehicle Rescue Training
This weekend marked the start of the first module of the Vehicle Rescue Technician course held at the Tri-County Fire School in Smethport, PA. Eight members enrolled in the course and can been seen below learning the basics of vehicle stablization.
March 30, 2008 - West Washington Accident
Today at 1:42 PM crews were dispatched to a two-car MVA on West Washington just West of the Marilla Reservoir. Engine 151 was first to arrive on scene and reported on two patients who were both already self-extricated. Engine 153 arrived on scene with Chief 15-10 (Brocius) and Chief 15 (Burkhouse) on board and Chief 15 established command. Bradford City ambulance MA-1 arrived on scene and requested a second BLS ambulance for the second patient. Station 19 (Corydon Township) was also requested to the scene for assistance with traffic control. Units were on scene for about 1 hour assisting PD and towing.
Its Almost Golf Time!

Training Weekend
This weekend crews will be traveling to the Tri-County Fire School grounds for training. Eight members will begin the first module of their Vehicle Rescue Technician certification. One officer will be obtaining his Incident Safety Officer certification. Three newer members will be completing the Fire Ground Support module of their Del-Mar Firefighting program. March 26, 2008 - Chimney Fire
At 5:40 PM County Dispatch struck box 1531 for a chimney fire at 2 Fleetwood Drive. Captian 15-53 (Eliason) established command while crews from engines 151 and 155 extinguished the fire with dry chemical. Crews then laddered the chimney and checked the structure for extension. Engine 153 was held to a stand-by at the West Branch station until crews cleared the scene.
March 23, 2008 - Hedgehog Roll-Over
About 3:00 AM this morning crews responded to a vehicle roll-over on Hedgehog Lane. Captain 15-53 (Eliason) established command while the crew from engine 151 searched for occupants. With no occupants found on scene, Chief 15 (Burkhouse) and engine 153 were canceled enroute. Crews remained on scene for about one hour assisting PD and towing.
March 15, 2008 - Annual Service Awards Banquet
Saturday evening the department hosted its 26th Annual Service Awards Banquet at the Interstate Parkway Social Hall. Receiving years of service awards were Dan Burkhouse and Jerry Spindler for 30 years, Dick Williams for 25 years, Rick Grandinetti for 10 years, and John Etter, Paul Etter, Randy Grandinetti, and Jeff Valerius Jr, for 5 years of service. Joy Brocius and Rick Grandinetti also received special service awards for their extra efforts over the past year. Steve Abers was recognized for being selected as the departments 2007 Firefighter of the Year. Twenty two memebrs were also recognized for exceeding minimum training requirments in 2007. Ed Hayden served as the Master of Ceremonies and Wayne Kovac, Coordinator of Fire Training for Butler Community College, was the guest speaker.
March 10, 2008 - MVA Route 770
Just after 10:00 pm this evening, crews were dispatched to a one vehicle motor accident with entrapment. Upon arrival, crews found a SUV on it's side and one patient who was self extracated. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) assumed command while personnel assisted Bradford City Ambulance and trafic control. Units on scene: Engine 153, Utility 152 and Engine 151 aided with traffic control. Department personnel were on scene for approximately 45 minutes.
March 4, 2008 - MVA Mindard Run
This morning just before 8:00, the depatment was dispatched to a one vehicle motor accident on Mindard Run hill. Upon arrival crews found one vehicle off the road in to a ditch. Crews were on scene for approximately 30 minutes. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) had command. Units on scene: Engine 153.
March 1, 2008 - ICS 200 Training
This weekend 14 members of BTVFD attended an Incident Command level 200 class that was held at the Custer City station. Also attending the class was a special guest, and new Township Supervisor Gail Bauer. The class was instructed by PA Fire Instructor Bruce Manning.
February 29, 2008 - Mutual Aid Structure Fire
This evening at 6:30, B.T.V.F.D. was dispatched mutual aid to a structure fire box with Station 7 Hilltop V.F.D. The remote location and heavy snow fall made conditions difficult for arriving apparatus. Upon arrival, crews found fire venting through the front window and roof. Crews utilized two hand lines for the initial attack. Other departments on scene included Rew V.F.D., Smethport V.F.D., and Lewis Run V.F.D. Bradford Township crews were on scene for approximately 3 hours.
February 27, 2008 - Medical Assist
Around 4:30 PM this afternoon the department was dispatched to an unresponsive person outside on an ATV in the 1100 block of High Street. Chief 15 (Burkhouse), Chief 15-10 (Brcoius), and Engine 153 responded. Crews assisted ALS with packaging the patient and carrying him out to the road.
February 26, 2008 - CO Investigation
Just before midnight tonight a request came in for a Chief Officer to investigate a CO alarm activation in the 200 block of Minard Run Road. Chief 15-10 (Brocius) arrived on scene and detected unsafe levels of CO with the multi-gas meter. A faulty cap on the hot water tank flu was discoverd and repaired by the home owner.
February 25, 2008 - South Avenue Vehicle Accident
The department was dispatched this evening to a one vehicle roll-over in the 1100 block of South Avenue. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) was first to arrive and reported one patient who was self-extricated. Chief 15-10 (Brocius) arrived on Engine 153 and established traffic control while the engine crew provided lighting and did a patient assessment. Engine 151 responded and was canceled enroute.

February 24, 2008 - Kinzua Outdoor Show
Hats off to the junior members for their efforts in working the booth at this years show. The junior members displayed water rescue, ice rescue, and wildfire equipment, public safety information, and department action and recuritment videos. They did a great job greeting the public and entertaining potential candidates for the junior program. Thanks to all the veteran firefighters for assisting the juniors with this project.
February 21, 2008 - Oil Rig Fire
This evening we were dispatched to an oil rig fire at 11:12 P.M., off of Interstate Parkway near the Pennsylvania - New York border. Firefighters faced several challenages as the fire was located two miles back into the woods, 17 degree weather and snow. An initial attempt to extinguish the fire using a small amount of water and dry chemical extinguishers proved ineffective. Additional mutual aid resources were requested from Derrick City, Lewis Run, Corydon Township and Americian Refining Group. With additional fire departments and oil industry support, a cooridinated attack was done using water and dry chemical extinguishers. The fire was extinguished at 2:51 A.M. Oil company personnel capped the well. Chief Burkhouse was Operations Chief, Captain Eliason was Command Officer. Units on scene were Engine 151, 153, 155 and Utility 152; Derrick City Utility 115, Lewis Run Utility 63 and Corydon Township Tanker 193. No injuries were reported.
February 20, 2008 - Route 219 Vehicle Accident
At approximately 7:30 this evening, B.T.V.F.D. was dispatched to a one car motor vehicle accident on Route 219 just south of Brown Town Road. Arriving crews found one car with front and rear damage located in the middle of the road. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) assumed Route 219 command while crews secured the scene and assisted with traffic control. Units were on scene for approximately 30 minutes. Units on scene: Engine 153 and Utility 152.
February 19, 2008 - Minard Run Vehicle Accident
Another MVA on Mindard Run brought crews out this afternoon around 2:30. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) arrived on scene to find one vehicle off the roadway into trees. Engine 153 was on scene for approximately 20 minutes.

More ice sent cars sliding off of the roadways all over the Township this morning. Below, crews assisted motorists and the City ambulance crew on West Corydon Street. Engine 151 also responded.

February 15, 2008 - Minard Run Vehicle Accident
Early morning tones sent personnel out about 2:30 AM to a reported vehicle roll-over on Rt 770 East - Minard Run hill. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) was first to arrive on scene confirming a roll-over over the embankment with one patient self-extricated. Chief 15-10 (Brocius) arrived with the crew on Engine 153 and established lighting and traffic control. ALS completed the patient refusal and released the patient to Township Police. Crews assisted the towing service and returned to quarters around 3:30 AM. Engine 151 staged in quarters at the West Branch Station.

February 11, 2008 - Mutual Aid Pre-Planning
This evening seven members traveled to Lewis Run to participate in two industrial facility tours. Chief 6 (Maze) of the Lewis Run Volunteer Fire Department invited our department, along with the Lafayette Township Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, to participate in the tours. The tours were conducted at the Alleghany Bradford Corporation and the Alleghany Surface Technologies facilities, which perform metal finishing and fabricating operations. Thanks to Lenny Hungiville Safety Manager at ABC/AST for conducting the tours.
February 10, 2008 - Hazardous Materials Training
Today 24 members participated in an eight hour Refresher class to maintain their Hazardous Materials Operations Level certification. The training was held at the Custer City station and was conducted by State Instructor Bruce Manning from the Port Alleghany Fire Department. The training consisted of classroom lecture, an exam, and outdoor evolutions including foam application and spill containment methods. A couple of new members and junior members also received their eight hour Awareness level certification.
February 8, 2008 - Motor Vehicle Accident
At 4:11 PM today the department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Rt 219 in front of the Kwik-Fill gas station. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) was first to arrive on scene and established command. Chief 15 then provided a scene report that two vehicles were involved with one patient in each vehicle with one patient entrapped. Engine 153 arrived on scene and initiated the extrication with Chief 15-10 (Brocius) as Operations. The ALS crew requested medivac helicopters to the scene and Chief 15-20 (Lamielle) assumed the LZ officer. Engine 151 arrived on scene and dropped off additional rescue personel and was then re-assigned to the LZ. Due to bad weather in the area both flight services were unable to fly, and Bradford City ambulances transported the patients to the Bradford Regional Medical Center. Crews were on scene for just over one hour.

February 3, 2008 - UPB Dryer Fire
This afternoon the department was dispatched to dryer fire in the Commons building at the Unversity of Pittsburgh Braford campus. At 1:08 PM Engines 151 & 153 along with Chief 15 (Burkhouse) responded and were advised by the dispatch center that the Campus Police had knocked the fire down with an extinguisher. Units arrived to find that the fire was out, but smoke had filled the large two-story building. Crews went to work using controlled positive pressure ventilation to begin clearing the smoke. The Bradford City Fire department brought two additional fans to the scene due to the size of the building. It was the first time the department had used the new accountibility boards. With multiple crews working on multiple floors it was a good test for the new boards which worked very well. Crews were on scene for about an hour and a half, and the Lewis Run VFD provided stand-by coverage dring the incident.

February 2, 2008 - Motor Vehicle Accident
At about 2:18 this morning the fire department was dispatched to a one vehicle roll-over with entrapment in the 1200 block of South Avenue. Firefighters extricated a passenager from the vehicle. Engines 153 and 151 responded and used stabilization struts, hydraulic tools and a reciprocating saw to remove the roof of the vehicle. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) was OIC.
February 1, 2008 - Motor Vehicle Accident
At around 7:00 this evening the fire department was dispatched to a one car MVA on Minard Run hill. Upon arrival, crews found one car off the roadway and into a tree. There were no injuries and fire department personnel remained on scene until the vehicle was removed. OIC E. Wright. Units on scene: Engine 153.
January 30, 2008 - High winds = 4 runs
Tones started dropping around 4:00 AM this morning for trees down into wires in the 1300 block of High Street. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) arrived to find the primary high voltage wires down on top of the vehicles at a residence. Engine 153 and crew with Chief 15-10 (Brocius) stood by on scene until Pennelec crews arrived. A second dispatch sent Engine 155 and Captain 15-53 (Eliason) to trees down into wires on West Washington Street near the Marilla Reservoir. A third call sent the same crew from the first call and Utility 152 to a tree down blocking the road on Route 770 West near the top of the hill. A full company response was then dispatched for a rescue of a victum in a truck that was crushed by a falling tree. This incident was back in the woods near the top of Interstate Parkway, and local logging crew personnel extricated the victum before Fire/EMS units arrived.
January 29, 2008 - West Warren Road MVA
At 3:30 PM this afternoon the department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on the hill on West Warren Road. The McKean County 911 center provided additional information reporting the accident to be a roll-over with persons entrapped. Upon arrival crews found the patient to be self-extricated and began to assist ALS with patient care. Engine 153, Utility 152, Chief 15 (Burkhouse) and Chief 15-10 (Brocius) responded. Engine 151 and crew stood by at the West Branch station.
January 29, 2008 - Ice Storm
A significant ice event sent crews out early this morning. Around 3:00 AM this morning, the department was dispatched at the request of the Pennsylvania State Police to close Route 219 due to ice. A number of additional departments were dispatched throughout McKean an Elk counties to close the highway. Crews struggled for four hours to manage a major traffic back up until the roads were treated and the order was given to open the road.
January 27, 2008 - Motor Vehicle Accident
The department was dispatched to an MVA on Minard Run Hill at 2:33 today. Crews arrived on scene to find a severely damaged pickup truck that had struck a cement culvert and two trees. The operator had left the scene and was later located by police. Engine 153, Chief 15 (Burkhouse) and Chief 15-10 (Brocius) responded.
January 26, 2008 - A busy Saturday
Motor Vehicle Accident - This morning around 7:45, the department was dispatched to a one car accident on Minard Run near Penn Hills Golf Course. Crews secured the scene until the vehicle was removed.
Residential Fire Alarm - Around 2:35 today, our training session was interrupted for a smoke detector activation at 768 West Washington Street. A minor water leak was found to have tripped the detector. Engines 151 & 153, Utility 152, Chief 15 (Burkhouse) and Chief 15-10 (Brocius) responded.
Chimney Fire - Around 10:50 this evening the fire department was dispatched to a chimney fire at 2 Joseph Lane. Crews checked the chimney and the structure for fire extension. Three engines responded and were on scene for about 30 minutes.
January 26, 2008 - Building Construction Class
This weekend, 29 firefighters from Bradford Township V.F.D., Bradford City, Derrick City V.F.D., Corydon Township V.F.D., and Lewis Run V.F.D. took part in a 16 hour "Principles of Building Construction" class which was held at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford campus. The class, which was taught by state certified instructor Mike Johson covered building construction, methods of construction and types of building materials and how they relate to fire scene operations. The program was hosted by the Bradford Township V.F.D. and was made possible through funding from a four year SAFER grant that the department received in 2007.
January 21, 2008 - Two AFA's
Automatic Fire Alarms were the theme for today. The first was for a stand-by for Station 1 (Bradford City) for an alarm at the high school. The second was in our district for the Penn Hills Counrty Club with Station 1 on stand-by for us. Both alarms were quickly re-called and no units responded.
January 19, 2008 - Grant Awards
Congratulations to the Corydon Township Volunteer Fire Department, and the Lewis Run Volunteer Fire Department on thier recent AFG grant awards!
January 18, 2008 - Mutual Aid Chimney Fire
This evening around 9:00 pm, B.T.V.F.D. crews were dispatched to provide mutual aid for a chimney fire in Corydon Township. Station 19 (Corydon Township V.F.D.) handled the chimney fire while Engine 151 stood by at the corner of West Washington and Wolf Run Road.
In route to the chimney fire, Engine 151 came upon a 1 car motor vehicle accident. A SUV spun into a ditch which resulted in the vehicle to come to rest on its side. No service was rendered. OIC Captain 15-53 (Eliason).
January 16, 2008 - Mutual Aid Structure Fire
Just before noon today Engine 151 and crew with Lieutenent Steve Hughes as the officer responded for a transfer assignment to the Derick City VFD station. Derrick City units were already on scene of a structure fire with the Rew VFD on South kendall Avenue. Shortly after Engine 151 transfered, Engine 153 was special requested to the scene to provide additional fire fighters and assist with water supply. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) and Chief 15-20 (Lamielle) responded direct, while Chief 15-10 (Brocius) responded on the engine. Crews assisted the on-scene departments for about 30 minutes before being released.
Training Announcement:
The department will be hosting a Building Constuction class on January 26th & 27th. It will be held at the University of Pittsburgh campus with lunch provided at the UPB Commons facility. The class is scheduled for 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in room 107F (Fisher Hall). Approximately 10 - 15 openings will be available for neighboring departments. January 13, 2008 - 2nd Traffic Detail
For the second time in 3 days crews were dispatched to close Rt 219 North-bound at Owens Way to assist the City with another accident in the construction zone at the Foreman Street on-ramp. Chief 15 (Burkhouse), 15-10 (Brocius), Utility 152, and Engine 153, were on scene for about 30 minutes.
January 10, 2008 - Haz Mat Stand By - U.P.B.
Shortly after 8:00 this morning, a crew from B.T.V.F.D. responded to "stand by" at the University of Pittsburgh due to a water leak in a chemical storage building. Upon arrival, the department's Hazardous Material Technicians were asked to secure numerous containers which contained chemicals used at the university. No actual spills occured. Department personnel were on scene for approximately 45 minutes. Units on scene: Engine 151
January 10, 2008 - Traffic Detail
At 4:45 Am crews were dispatched to close the North-bound lane of Rt 219 at Owens Way due to an accident in the construction zone in the City near Main Street. Chief 15 (Burkhouse), Chief 15-10 (Brocius), and Engine 153 were on scene for about 2 hours.
January 9, 2008 - High Winds
About 5:30 AM this morning high winds brought a tree down in the roadway in the 100 block of Hedgehog Lane. Captain 15-53 (Eliason) responded with a crew and Utility 152 and cleared the roadway.
January 6, 2008 - Structure Box
This evening crews were dispactched to box 1521 for a structure fire behind the old Hanum Rest home on High Street & Minard Run. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) arrived on scene to find a controlled burn and issued a recall of responding units.
January 5, 2008 - Industrial Fire Alarm
Around noon today the department was dispatched to an AFA at the new Universal Well Services facility on High street. Chief 15 (Burkhouse) arrived on scene to confirm a false alarm and issed a recall.
January 4, 2008 - Motor Vehicle Accident
The first call of the year happened this evening at approximately 7:45. Fire department personnel were dispatched to a one car motor vehicle accident on Langmaid Lane. Additional information revealed that a pickup truck had traveled off the road and that there was no one around the vehicle. Captain 1553 (Elaison) assumed command. Personnel were on scene for approximately one hour to assist the towing service. Units on scene: Engine 151.
